At the dawning of the 21st century, buoyed by fifty years’ worth of long-standing relationships with the industry’s greats, the Festival de Cannes embarked on a new chapter hand in hand with film-makers: getting back to the roots of the artistic process, and tapping into the life force of creative power. It opened a residency for artists in Paris, launched a film school competition, and set up a short film market: schemes and initiatives that the Festival intended as a return to what truly matters, and its own unique contribution to making contemporary cinema everything it is today.
